This explains what personal data Comic Compass collects and what we do with it. We collect as little as we can.
Who we are
Comic Compass (comic-compass.app) is a Kettle & Keyboard company. Kettle & Keyboard is the data controller. Contact: [email protected].
Reading without an account
You can read every reading order without an account. We don't use advertising cookies. We measure visits with Umami, which we host ourselves: it doesn't use cookies, doesn't store your IP address and only produces totals such as page views. Your light or dark theme choice is saved in your own browser and never sent to us. To make the site work offline, your browser keeps copies of pages you've opened and orders you follow; these stay on your device and you can clear them in your browser settings.
Google Analytics (only if you allow it)
We'd also like to use Google Analytics to understand which pages and orders people find useful. It only sets cookies if you choose "Allow analytics" in the banner; until then, and if you choose "No thanks", it runs in a limited mode that sets no cookies and sends Google only basic, cookieless signals (such as that a page was viewed) without identifying you. With your permission, Google Analytics uses cookies (named _ga) to recognise repeat visits, for up to 14 months. Google LLC provides it and may process data in the United States under the UK's data adequacy arrangements. We have turned off advertising features and don't share this data for ads. You can change your choice at any time with "Cookie settings" at the bottom of every page.
Our site is delivered through Cloudflare, which processes your IP address to protect the site from abuse and to serve pages quickly. Our servers keep short-lived logs for security.
If you ask to hear when we open
Before launch, you can leave your email address to get one message when Comic Compass opens. We use it for that email only and delete the list once it's sent. The legal basis is your consent; to withdraw it, email [email protected].
If you join the supporter waiting list
If you ask to hear when supporter extras open, we keep your email address (and link it to your account if you're signed in) to send you that one message. We delete the list once supporter extras open and the message is sent. The legal basis is your consent; to withdraw it, email [email protected].
If you create an account
- Email address: to sign you in with one-time links and, if you choose, to tell you when an order you follow changes. Sign-in emails are sent by Resend on our behalf.
- Sign-in session: one strictly necessary cookie keeps you signed in for up to 30 days. We record the IP address and browser of each session to protect your account.
- Your activity: the orders you follow and the issues you mark as read, so we can show your progress.
The legal basis is our contract with you: we need this data to provide the account features you asked for.
If you become a supporter
Payments are handled by Stripe. We never see or store your card details. We keep a Stripe customer reference and your subscription status so we know which features to unlock.
If you report a problem, send a suggestion or request an order
We store your message and, only if you give it, an email address so we can reply. We use it only to deal with your message and improve the site, and delete it 12 months after we've dealt with it. The legal basis is our legitimate interest in running and improving the site.
How long we keep data
- Accounts, follows and progress: until you delete your account.
- Sign-in links: 15 minutes. Sessions: 30 days.
- Launch list and supporter waiting list: deleted once their one email has been sent.
- Problem reports, suggestions and requests: 12 months after we've dealt with them.
- Analytics cookies (only if you allow them): up to 14 months.
- Payment records: as long as the law requires for tax and accounting.
- Backups: deleted data can remain in encrypted backups for up to 35 days before they're overwritten.
Where it's stored
On our own server in London, UK, hosted by Akamai (Linode), with nightly encrypted backups. Our processors are Akamai (hosting), Cloudflare (delivery and security), Resend (email), Stripe (payments) and, if you allow analytics cookies, Google (Google Analytics).
Your rights
Under UK data protection law you can ask to see, correct, export or delete your data, and object to how we use it. Email [email protected] and we'll respond within a month. You can also complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.
Changes
If we change this policy in a way that affects you, we'll update the date above and, if you have an account, email you first.
